Study: Half of bosses insist employees work on vacation

Here in the heart of vacation season a new study shows about half of all bosses expect employees to stay connected while they're on vacation.

Since we have the ability to be on the job 24/7, we are according to this poll conducted by Harris Interactive for Ricoh.

And if an informal, unscientific survey in the CBD is any indication, the working vacation is also prevalent locally.  "Absolutely," a downtown worker told me, "I take my laptop, check my email every day, actually several times a day."  He feels working 3-4 hours a day and staying connected beats working an 8-9 hour day, and still allows him to enjoy his vacation.

But another downtown worker told me, "I'm getting ready to go on a cruise and don't plan on checking email or anything...I think it's healthier."

And this trend is not helping family life, as 67 percent said family members get upset when a loved one works while on vacation according to this national poll.

Even though this study says half of all employees surveyed by Harris would rather have a root canal than work on vacation, I couldn't find one person in the CBD who would agree with that statement.
