S.E. Louisiana leads the nation for some good jobs without a 4 year degree

More accolades for Southeast Louisiana are out today.  This time national rankings have this region doing well in high paying jobs for those who don't complete college.

"A new report from the Brookings Institution found that the New Orleans region ranked #3 out of the top 100 U.S. metro areas for jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) that are available to people without a bachelor's degree.  Notably, Baton Rouge, the other half of the Southeast Super Region, ranked #1," Greater New Orleans, Inc. President and CEO Michael Hecht said in a news release.

He says while nationally about ten percent of all jobs are available to people with STEM knowledge but no bachelor's degree, here it is higher.

"The report found that 12.4 percent of all jobs in metro New Orleans are available to people who don't have a four-year college degree, but substantial STEM knowledge — with many of them tied to the petrochemical industry and industrial construction or construction trades," Hecht said.

Tulane Business Professor Mark Rosa says it's good news.

"That's excellent," Rosa told WWL First news.  "Engineering and math oriented jobs have a better pay scale."

He says it means that people who don't get a four year degree can still make a good living in Southeast Louisiana if they can get work in science, technology, engineering and math.
