• Greasing of the Poles

In a 47-year-old tradition, they greased the poles at the Royal Sonesta Hotels Friday morning. The petroleum jelly applied to the balcony supports is supposed to help prevent people from climbing the poles to the coveted perch above all the wild Mardi Gras fun on Bourbon Street.

Tornadoes touched down in southern Louisiana Tuesday, wiping houses from their foundations and downing power lines as severe weather moved across the region.
