The same day a federal judge approved the Orleans Parish Prison consent decree mandating sweeping reforms at the city's lockup, two teens got into a vicious and bloody fight over dinner WWL-TV reports.
Prison officials have confirmed that 18-year-old accused killer Edward Dean poured hot grits over 16-year-old Brian Ellis's face and Ellis allegedly responded by stabbing Dean 20 times.
Sheriff Marlin Gusman says Ellis, who is accused of participating in a savage beating, provoked the attack.
"We do our best. These types of things are things we try to avoid. This happened during a meal, not during some isolated time of night. Everybody was out there," Gusman told WWL-TV.
Meanwhile, a local contractor has pleaded guilty in federal court today in the bid-rigging and bribery scheme at the Orleans Parish Prison. Richard Molenaar III pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.
