Tigers win! LSU tops Oklahoma 2-0 in Super Regional
Jeff Palermo Reporting
How it happened: Two major league prospects went toe-to-toe on a hot night in Baton Rouge, but LSU’s Aaron Nola was a little bit better. The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the 8th, before the Tigers finally broke through on Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray to secure a 2-0 victory.
At the plate: Tyler Moore has had some big hits during his LSU career and had another one in the bottom of the 8th. Moore followed up a one-out Jacoby Jones triple, with a pinch-hit double over the right fielder’s head. Moore would score on Mark Laird single. Laird had three hits on the night after looking over matched in his first at-bat.
On the mound: Oklahoma’s Jonathan Gray was as good as advertised. His slider was tough to hit, but he eventually wore down in the bottom of the 8th inning. Gray’s final line 7.1 IP, 5 hits, two runs, two walks and nine strikeouts. Gray threw 118 pitches.
But Nola was the story. He allowed just two hits in a complete game shutout. Nola did not walk anyone and struck out six in what goes down as one of the best postseason performances in LSU history. Nola is now 12-and-0 on the year.
What it means: For the second straight season, LSU is one victory away from reaching the College World Series. The Tigers didn’t get it done last year, so there’s not a feeling of over confidence.
Up next: Game 2 of the Super Regional series is Saturday night at 6 PM. Oklahoma will send left-hander Dillon Overton to the mound. He’s 9-and-2 with a 2.91 ERA.
