New Orleans continues its comeback. Fueled by growth on the Northshore and in St. Charles Parish, metro New Orleans has regained 92 percent of its pre-Katrina population.
The numbers are an estimate of the population as of July 2012, and according to the Census, New Orleans population is around 369,250 people. Metro-wide, it's 1.2 million.
"The metro is at about 92 percent of pre-Katrina," said Allison Plyer, demographer for the Greater New Orleans Community Data Center. "Orleans is about 80 percent of pre-Katrina, Jefferson is pretty close to pre-Katrina."
Plyer said continuing job growth has helped attract residents, but it may not be until the 2020 Census that the population reaches where it was in 2005.
