New Orleans Police are investigating a murder after responding to reports of shots fired on the I-10 near the Superdome.
It happened around 5:00 a.m. right where the eastbound I-10 and the Pontchartrain Expressway split near the Dome.
When first responders arrived on the scene they found a dead body in the car.
"NOFD came out and they discovered that the guy had been shot multiple times," said Officer Frank Robertson, a spokesman for the New Orleans Police Department.
"The victim expired on the scene," Robertson confirmed. "The car was shot up."
It's not clear where the murder actually happened. Police shut down the entire highway while officers and detectives fanned out to inspect the road for any physical evidence.
Police reopened most lanes of the I-10 headed towards downtown before 8:00 a.m. All lanes were open around 8:20am.
A news release from the NOPD says:
