Louisiana tax deadline day

Today is the final day for Louisiana residents to submit their 2012 state tax returns.

Department of Revenue spokesman Byron Henderson says they've processed 1.5 million state returns this year, after processing just over two-million last year.

If the number of filers is about the same, that means about 25 percent have waited until the last minute to settle up with the state.

Henderson says taxpayers who waited until today, should file electronically.

"You can file your return, you can make a payment electronically, you can even upload... documentation," he noted.

Henderson says for those who still mail in their returns, the envelope must have today's date as the postmark.

He says if a taxpayer needs more time to complete their 2012 state income tax return, they can request an extension, but to avoid penalties they have to pay too.

"You have to request that extension electronically, that only allows you more time to file your return.  If you have taxes due, that has to be paid by the end of the day today."
