New Orleans authorities Tuesday delivered a message to known and suspected gang members: go straight, or go to jail.Leaders of the NOPD, state and federal law enforcement, and Mayor Mitch Landrieu met at criminal court with nearly two dozen individuals suspected of involvement with gangs in New Orleans, and delivered a warning.
"This community is no longer going to accept this," New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said. "The number of anonymous tips that we get through Crimestoppers is going through the roof."
Mayor Mitch Landrieu said they could either accept the offer to get counseling, job training and other help to begin a normal life, or they could take their chances on the street.
Landrieu said similar programs in New York, Los Angeles and other large metropolises have had success.
