14 inmates seen on a shocking video shot in Orleans Parish Prison have been arrested on contraband and weapons charges, according to the Orleans District Attorney's office.
A nine-count indictment charges the 14 with contraband and charges one inmate, Arthur Johnson, with being a felong in possesion of a firearm.
Johnson is seen on parts of the video roaming freely on Bourbon Street and bragging about being able to come and go at the prison.
Sheriff Marlin Gusman today said in a statement, "I am pleased with the results that followed my request of District Attorney Cannizzaro to investigate this matter impartially. My office cooperated fully with the District Attorney on this investigation."
The statement said the sheriff's office would continue to work with prosecutors in the case.
The shocking videos shown in federal court showed a loaded handgun, drugs, and alcohol inside a locked cell at Orleans Parish Prison.
The video was shown turning testimony during a lawsuit brought by the Southern Poverty Law Center over conditions at the troubled jail facility.
In the video, inmates can be seen pulling cans of beer from a cooler in the cell, and another inmate displays an apparently loaded Glock handgun. The inmate holding the gun unloads three bullets from the gun to prove it's loaded.
The video played in court also showed inmates with cash, pills, and crack cocaine, along with a rousing game of dice played with large wads of money.
