Landrieu lays out view of tricentennial

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu today laid out his goals for the city as it approaches its 300th birthday in five years.

The mayor's "State of the City" speech touted the city's accomplishments in areas like economic development.

"We launched a public-private partnership called 'NOLA Business Alliance.' The result: 4,000 new jobs and world-class companies like General Electric are relocating here," the mayor said.

He also talked about challenges -- including violent crime. The mayor said there is progress, like a 25 percent drop in the murder rate compared to this time last year -- but he also said it's not good enough.

"In 2018, I see the beating heart of New Orleans, our neighborhoods happy and healthy," he said, with children playing in safe streets."
