Col. John Fortunato says several officers heard commotion including multiple gunshots coming from an apartment complex in the 2300-block of Lapalco Boulevard in Harvey. They raced to the scene to find three children and two women suffering from gunshot wounds. Col. Fortunato says all three children are ages three and under.
Fortunato says detectives learned that all victims were asleep in the apartment when there was a knock at the door, followed by someone claiming to be the police. According to investigators, the perpetrators then began shooting.
Police arriving on the scene noticed a vehicle speeding away from the area and a pursuit began that went across the Crescent City Connection bridge and ended near downtown New Orleans.
"The vehicle which was occupied by three unidentified black males exited the downramp," Fortunato said. "Shortly thereafter, after bailing out of the vehicle, they made one apprehension and just a little while ago I was told that we have two additional apprehensions."
Fortunato says deputies recovered one weapon from the vehicle and found two more weapons and clothing that matched the description of the suspects' near where they ditched the vehicle.
The colonel said most of the victims' injuries appear to be of the non-life-threatening variety, although he notes three of the victims are very young children, and one of the children was shot multiple times. The victims were taken to University Hospital.
