Bucs eye opportunity against Saints A shot at ruining New Orleans' perfect record is not the only reason the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers and young Josh Freeman are excited about facing the unbeaten Saints. Sunday begins a stretch in which the Bucs (1-8) play five of seven games against NFC South rivals, and they're eager to see how their rookie quarterback holds up.
Saints fans already looking to playoffs In a season of firsts, Black & Gold fans are now guessing how, not if, their Saints will land in postseason action. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says that as things stand now, the Saints need to win three more games to lock up the NFC South to secure a playoff bid.
Kristian: Saints players know they have to work harder to go all the way 9 and 0... Perfect, right? Not if you take a stroll through the Saints locker room and ask around. "This isn't a very happy locker room right now, guys are upset, because we want to play so much better," defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove told me.

Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams Press Conference Q: What is your take on Chris McAlister? A: I’ve known him for a long time and knew him when he was coming out, would have loved the opportunity to draft him when he was coming out, didn’t get that opportunity. I’ve competed against him a long time. He’s another guy for us to try to get ready to go. When he’s ready, I can’t tell you that.

QB to QB Brees and Bobby Drew Brees and our QB the Cajun Cannon their weekly QB to QB chat on WWL Saints Radio. Drew and Bobby reviewed the Saints 28-23 win over the Rams and they also discussed the Saints up coming game against the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Saints QB Drew Brees Press Conference Q: How much of the recent turnovers can be attributed to an aggressive mentality on offense? A: We’ve been able to overcome them, but that’s really I large part because our defense has gotten quite a few as well and then offensively, the drives we’re not turning it over we’re going out and getting points. It’s not a good habit to get into. We are aggressive.
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton Press Conference “A couple of notes in regards to the injury report, Jonathan Goodwin (ankle) did not practice; Lance Moore (ankle) did not practice; Jabari Greer (groin) did not practice; Darren Sharper (knee) was limited; David Thomas (knee) did not practice; Reggie Bush (knee) did not practice; Tracy Porter (knee) did not practice; Sedrick Ellis (knee) was limited."
Tampa Bay Head Coach Raheem Morris Conference Call Q: When you put on film of the Saints this year, does number 91 stands out on defense? A: On defense, what’s impressive is how much movement you get from everybody and how active they are on defense. 91 is playing well. Charles Grant is playing well. They are all playing well up front.
Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman Conference Call Q: What have you learned over the course of two NFL starts? A: I’ve learned a lot. Whether it be learning about myself, what defenses are trying to do to me, speeding up my game to make it a little even, because sometimes there are instances like last week where I was scrambling and I felt like I had more time.
Mark: Saints changing routine to reduce turnovers As the wins continue to mount for the 9-0 New Orleans Saints, so do the turnovers. In the last month, the "Black and Gold" have turned the ball over to opponents 13 times (7 interceptions and 6 lost fumbles).
Geller: Saints' "Big Will" a huge thrill t's no secret that the Saints 9-0 record is due largely in part to the defense's ability to wreak havoc on the opposition. The fleur-di-lis D has caused 25 turnovers (17 INT's, 8 forced fumbles). The Saints defense has 21 sacks and has scored an astonishing 7 touchdowns.

Big Chief's NFL Top 10 -Week #11 Each week during the NFL Season I post my top--the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my top ten as we head into the 11th week of the season.
Payton pleased with Saints' survival skills For Saints offensive tackle Jon Stinchcomb, it's all about perspective. Since he was drafted by New Orleans in 2003, he's been part of only two winning teams. The second of those is this year's edition, which reached the franchise's first-ever 9-0 record at St. Louis on Sunday despite one of its least impressive performances all season.

New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton Discusses Win at St. Louis Payton Talks Injuries, Turnovers and Being 9-0.
Deke: Saints 9 and 0 - and numbers don't lie! You know I always say never buck a trend. Whether a team is hot or not...whether they're winning or losing, you have to go with the percentages. The trend right now is not good for the Saints. The Saints have struggled in each of their last four games.
Porter doesn't need surgery, will be back this season Saints fans can breath a little easier today. It looks like starting corner Tracy Porter's injury isn't as bad as feared. Coach Sean Payton today said there is "no question" the second year defensive back will be back on the field this season.
Nicks: "Nobody seems to know" what's wrong with the Saints If you listen to some of the New Orleans Saints players, it sounds more like a team that is 0 - 9, than a team that is a record setting 9 - 0. "We are so capable of playing way better. It's just all the points we left out, the turnovers, the missed assignments, the missed tackles.
Fans gather in droves to welcome home 9-0 Saints Throngs of Saints fans turned out at Louis Armstrong International Airport to welcome home their undefeated Black & Gold heroes. Many fans there told WWL First News that this was a first time to trek out to airport to be there when their team landed.
Saints get scare from Rams, remain unbeaten Reggie Bush helped the unbeaten New Orleans Saints overcome another bundle of mistakes and get off to the best start in team history.
Deke: Saints should win big and work on mistakes The Saints can win nine straight games for just the second time in franchise history, and go 9 - 0 for the first time ever. New Orleans can also maintain at least a three game lead in the NFC South over their nearest competitor with a win over the Rams Sunday.
3 Saints sidelined for St. Louis - several more unsure The New Orleans Saints today announced that defensive back Jabari Greer, receiver Lance Moore and defensive lineman Sedrick Ellis will not play Sunday in St. Louis.
Kristian: Trap game? Trap this! The 8 and 0 New Orleans Saints travel to St. Louis this Sunday to battle the 1 and 7 Rams. Given the disparity of the records between the two teams, this one has all the makings for a "trap game" right?
Meachem - another piece falling into place for the Saints Robert Meachem promised during New Orleans' training camp that he would remind the Saints why they made him their first-round draft choice in 2007. Half way into his third season, Meachem has advanced far beyond the frustration of his rookie season, when he arrived at rookie camp out of shape, hurt his knee, and wound up spending all 16 regular season games on the inactive list and watching from the sideline in a sweat suit.

Geller: Saints halfway there and livin' on a prayer No, I wasn't listening to Bon Jovi when I wrote this, but thought the title was fitting for this team. The Saints have made it to the midway point of the year and boast an 8-0 record despite some imperfect play.
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week #10 Each week I post my NFL Top 10. Here's the Top 10 for week 10 in the NFL. Only the Saints and Colts remain perfect...

Saints season not special enough yet Jabari Greer takes a cautious view of the dramatic improvements made by the unbeaten Saints in only one season. "It's a long season and people like to analyze where you are at a certain point," Greer said. "But as a competitor, you realize it doesn't matter until it's over.
Unbeaten Saints way ahead of last season METAIRIE, La. (AP) -- The unbeaten New Orleans Saints are less than a year removed from the frustrations of a mediocre 8-8 season, yet seemingly a world away.
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton Discusses Win Over the Panthers Payton Talks About Mistakes He Would Wants to See Cleaned Up.
Deke: Saints battle tested and finishing strong on way to historic start They trailed the game until the final play of the third quarter, and they did not take their first lead of the game until 4:36 remained on the clock. But they are now 8-0 for the first time ever and have taken complete control of the NFC South.
Saints vs Panthers Postgame Quotes We were getting a lot of coverage. We’re not going to force throws. Carolina did a good job in coverage. Historically, they’ve been a real patient defense. We made a few plays later in the game. I thought the offensive line played well, particularly in the second half.
Saints go to 8-0 with 30-20 win over Panthers What might be finest Saints team is off to the best start in club history.
Deke: Saints should win - may not cover the spread Of all the Saints games this season, this is the game I just don't like. It has nothing to do with the fact that Carolina has won seven straight in the Dome against the Saints. It's about the way the Panthers have played.
Kristian: Saints should be able to hold off the Cats While the Saints have had a perfect record this season, things have not gone exactly how the Panthers were hoping. 0 and 3 was hardly the way the defending NFC South Champion Carolina Panthers imagined the 2009 season would start.
Vegas: Saints a Superbowl favorite It's one thing to dream of the Saints going to the Superbowl, but it's quite another for the oddsmakers in Las Vegas to actually pick the Saints to win it all! It happened today as they made the Saints at 3-to-1 favorites to win the big game in Miami this coming February.
Mark: Panthers stand in the way of Saints milestone In the 43 year history of the New Orleans Saints, only 2 teams have started season 7-0. The 1991 squad got off to a 7-0 start and this year's version of the Black and Gold has raced out to 7-0.
QB to QB Brees and Bobby Drew and Bobby held their weekly chat on SAINTSRadio Wednesday night at 6:40. Drew recapped the Saints 35-27 win over the Falcons and also talked about the Saints next foe NFC South rival Carolina.
Delhomme returns, but Panthers without healthy FB Jake Delhomme has recovered from a chest injury, but the Carolina Panthers are without a healthy fullback ahead of Sunday's game at New Orleans. Delhomme practiced Wednesday, three days after getting hit in the chest while throwing a pass in the win over Arizona. He was taken to a hospital for a CT scan, which showed no internal injuries.
Despite being 7-0, Saints have concerns Drew Brees sounds like a man who's embarrassed, and not because of all the compliments he's getting over the New Orleans Saints' perfect record through seven games. The Saints' past two victories have been riddled with errors, starting with eight turnovers, six of which were committed by the quarterback with four interceptions and a pair of fumbles.
Geller: Stop talking Pats and worry about Cats Listening to the majority of you Who Dats calling WWL on a daily basis and most of the media, you would think the Saints were playing the Patriots this Sunday in the Dome. I strongly advise that you take a page from the Black and Gold and not look past anyone.
The Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week #9 Each week I post my top ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my top ten as we head into the ninth week of the NFL season. Only the Saints and Colts remain perfect. Some big ones this week have the Eagles hosting the boys, Steelers @ Denver and Baltimore visits Cincy. Take a look at this week's rankings below.
Deke: Saints finding ways to win In a sixteen game season it’s hard to look your best each week. But at the end of the day it’s about winning and it’s about surviving. The New Orleans Saints are doing both. The Saints had more gas in the tank than their rivals from the East and they improved their record to 7-0.
Saints fans enjoy a meal of "dirty bird" Black & Gold faithful were rewarded with yet another win by their beloved Saints, in a Monday Night Football matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. After the 35-27 win, fans filed out of the Superdome to spontaneous chants of "Who Dat" and "7 and 0!"
Saints stay perfect with 35-27 win over Falcons The Saints have tied their best start to a season. Drew Brees had 308 yards passing, Pierre Thomas scored two touchdowns and Jabari Greer returned an interception for a score to help the Saints improve to 7-0 with a 35-27 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.
Saints fans ready to see the Falcons' wings clipped A Monday Night Football game in New Orleans qualifies as an unofficial holiday. Many Saints fans took the day off to set up their tailgate parties in parking lots and other vacant areas near the Superdome.
Hokie and Bobby: Tonight no repeat of 2006 MNF game This evening's matchup between the Saints and the Falcons have, at first blush, a lot of similarities: A Monday night game before an international audience, with an undefeated Saints team trying to keep Atlanta from making a play in the NFC South.
Saints embrace hype in MNF clash with Falcons Sean Payton would welcome a little deja vu. About three years and one month ago, the Saints played one of the most memorable games in franchise history at home on a Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons. It was the Saints' first game in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina and they looked invincible on that emotionally charged night.
Mark: Payton wants focus on next game, not Super Bowl game With the great success the Saints are having in the early going of the season, many fans and some of the media are talking Super Bowl. There is also a lot of chatter about home field advantage in the playoffs. Head coach Sean Payton is not ready to join that conversation.
Sharper looking sharp as ever at age 33
Darren Sharper takes some good-natured ribbing from teammates about his age and his supposed declining ability. When asked about Sharper's three touchdowns on interception returns this season, Saints strong safety Roman Harper deadpanned, "It's taken a lot of blocking to get him there."
Saints look to stay unbeaten against rival Falcons
Mardi Gras doesn't start until early February. It only seemed like a Carnival parade when the unbeaten New Orleans Saints returned to Louis Armstrong International Airport after their latest victory.
Kristian: Porter hurt as Saints prep for Falcons The Saints are in "game mode" as they get ready for their Monday night showdown with division rival Atlanta. On the injury front, the Saints walking wounded list grew by one player today. Cornerback Tracy Porter "did not practice" with a foot injury.
Saints: Evans out for the season The New Orleans Saints say fullback Heath Evans is out for the season. The team placed the 9 year veteran on injured reserve Thursday. He hurt his knee in the Dolphins game. The Saints picked up the free agent from the Patriots this season.
Kristian: Greer corners opposing offenses The Saints are off to a fast start standing atop the NFC at 6 and 0. They've gotten it done with an explosive offense and a ballhawking defense. It's a defense that added several key contributors during the off-season. The Saints signed Darren Sharper and Jabari Greer in the defensive backfield to get their hands on the football and prevent the big passing play.
Can the Saints win them all? Bobby and Hokie sound off Can the Saints win every game this season? Saints running back Reggie Bush said, "Can we go undefeated? Yes." Former Saints running back and current WWL Saints color commentator Hokie Gajan says, "It probably is a goal. To say that it's realistic, I don't think so."
QB to QB - Drew and the Cannon talk Dolphins Drew Brees and our QB, the Cajun Cannon, had their weekly QB to QB chat on WWL SAINTSRadio. Drew talked about the Saints thrilling 46-34 come from behind win over the Dolphins and the Black & Gold's next game Monday night against the Falcons in the dome.
Bush: Saints can go undefeated for the season Could the Saints win all of their games this season? Running back Reggie Bush says, "Yes. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be a fun ride. I'm just excited where we're at right now, 6 - 0. I'm on a great team right now. Everything is going well. We've got a great quarterback, a great group of guys on this team. Everything is good."
Geller: What Saints players do you want to send packing? What Saints players do you want to send packing? To the Pro Bowl that is. The game is not 'til January 31st, but voting started this and we should see plenty of Black and Gold helmets on the field in Miami this year.
Payton: 6 - 0 "doesn't mean anything" On opening day in the NBA, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton chose a basketball analogy to illustrate how he feels about the second-best start in the 43-year history of the New Orleans Saints.
Payton warns against making too much of fast start Sean Payton says the second-best start the New Orleans Saints have ever had doesn't promise anything. Next Monday night against Atlanta, New Orleans has a chance to match the 1991 Saints for the best start in team history at 7-0, which would also keep New Orleans atop the NFC.
The Big Chief's NFL Top Ten Here's my top ten as we head into the eighth week of the season. Only the Saints, Colts and Broncos remain undefeated. As predicted, the Vikings are no longer in the group. Take a look as this week's rankings below.
Payton October 27th Payton About Saints' Big Comeback Win and Looks Ahead to Falcons MNF.
Saints on record scoring pace The New Orleans Saints have been on a record scoring pace during their 6-0 start, and it isn't just their vaunted offense putting points on the board. Big plays by the defense were part of the reason the Saints scored 43 points in the last 30:02 minutes of Sunday's 46-34 victory at Miami. New Orleans' first touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery late in the first half.
Falcons fall 2 games behind Saints in division It is not too early for the Atlanta Falcons to say they are facing a must-win game if they hope to compete in the NFC South race.
The Falcons couldn't stop quarterback Tony Romo in Sunday's 37-21 loss at Dallas, and suddenly they're in danger of getting left behind in their division.
Monday Morning Quarterback with Drew Brees Saints QB Drew Brees dropped by WWL First News with Bob DelGiorno this morning to talk about the team's big 46-34 come from behind victory in Miami. Right off the bat Bob asked Drew about the key touchdown right before halftime. The Saints QB dove over the pile and started the comeback.
Hokie Gajan: Saints win was "just amazing" A big victory for the Saints, no doubt one of the best comebacks in team history. We've seen just the opposite happen in years past, when the Saints jump out to a big lead and then lose it. But in this case, it showed a lot of what this team is all about.
Video : Black and Gold fans welcome Saints home at airport As plane carrying the New Orleans Saints touched down at Louis Armstrong International airport 11:00pm Sunday night, a solid phalanx of fans lined the road connecting the team's terminal with Veteran's Boulevard.
Deke: Now do you believe? If you were not in that number, and you still happened to be one of the folks that did not believe that the Saints were a legitimate Super Bowl contender before Sunday's amazing victory, you have to believe now! The New Orleans Saints are 6-0, and they have done everything a fan could possibly want in their first six games of the season.
Saints on MNF the hot ticket The 6-0 Saints are on a roll and the return home to the Superdome one week from tonight on Monday Night Football. Their opponent: the hated Atlanta Falcons, in a game that has been sold out for months, when season ticket holders once again grabbed almost every available seat months before training camp began.
Vilma, Ochocinco and others face NFL fines Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma received a $10,000 fine Friday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Giants quarterback Eli Manning. Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco was fined $10,000 by the NFL for a uniform violation.
Kristian: Behind enemy lines The Dolphins started out the 2009 campaign 0 and 3 and have since ripped off two consecutive wins against Buffalo and the New York Jets (two teams the Saints have beaten thoroughly). They lead the league in rushing average per game, and time of possession. Their defense is solid, but their secondary can be exploited. They stop the run well, but Drew Brees could have a big game again this week.
Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams press conference transcript They have a really good run game in all facets. Right now, we thought we had a two headed monster this week. This one stat wise right now is ahead of them. I think Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both very, very, very dynamic runners, no matter what kind of offense you put them in.
Hokie Gajan: Saints will win despite effective Miami wildcat They're probably number one because of their running backs. It was something that they devised last year. It's basically like the option offense in college. Nobody runs that anymore. It's just something that the Dolphins put in their package because they do have a Ronnie Brown and a Ricky Williams at the running back position.
Deke: Look for the Saints to make it six straight I think we're all a little concerned about the Dolphins...due to a few factors. One, the Saints are coming off a huge win over New York, and this week they're taking on a team that's had two weeks to sit back and prepare for them. Two, anytime you go on the road and face a team that rushes the football as well as the Dolphins, that's plenty of reason for concern. But, if you look closely at the numbers, this match-up is as about as different as they come .
Saints use Bush to simulate wildcat in practice Reggie Bush enjoyed running a simulation of Miami's wildcat offense in practice this week - and said he even broke out a few long runs with it. But don't expect the New Orleans Saints to change what's led to their 5-0 start this season ...
Brees and Saints focused on Miami Each week our QB Bobby Hebert goes one on one with Saints QB Drew Brees. This week the two signal callers hit on the Saints big 48-27 win over the Giants and also previewed this weeks Saints game against the Miami Dolphins.
Kristian: Dolphins are wild and Ricky is at his best
The New Orleans Media meets with the head coach and one player from the Saints opposition each week. This week all we wanted to talk about was "The wild cat." What makes it tick? What makes it so hard to defend? Why did the Dolphins decide to start running it?
Saints O-line in synch on and off the field New Orleans lineman Zach Strief and Jon Stinchcomb stood side-by-side, feet shoulder-width apart. With nimble synchronicity, the lumbering duo tapped away in tandem on fake electric guitars while playing the video game Rock Band in the middle of the locker room.
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week 7 Each week during the NFL season, I post my Top 10 - the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the seventh week of the season. Can the Saints, Colts and Vikings all remain undefeated? One of them will go down this week!
Saints QB Drew Bress press conference transcript Sean said that last year after the Bucs game in the rain that you decided to be dedicated to running the ball more. What has that meant to you as an offense and what did you learn from that game? “If there’s one game that I specifically remember walking out of – and obviously I was frustrated for a lot of reasons, the fact that we didn’t win..."
Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano press conference transcript A lot is being made of the Wildcat. What makes it so effective for you guys? "I think the people that are handling the football for us. Certainly with Ronnie (Brown), Ricky (Williams), Pat (White), with any of the people handling the football, Pat Cobbs before his injury…"
Saints Head Coach Sean Payton press conference transcript “For an injury update from today’s practice, Jeff Charleston (rib) was full; Jason Kyle (ankle/knee) was full; Jahri Evans (toe) was full; Malcolm Jenkins (ankle) was limited; Jeremy Shockey (shoulder) was limited; Leigh Torrence (hamstring) was limited..."
Geller: Saints success starts with O-line Throughout the NFL the guys protecting the quarterback typically go unnoticed, unless their field general is on his back the entire game. Here in New Orleans the Saints offense usually grabs most of the headlines, but the offensive line is left off the front page. All they've done is limit the opposition's defense to just 4 sacks this season, and work hard to keep #9 safe.
Mark: Saints can "climb higher than any team in New Orleans history" After two seasons of doing the chasing, the New Orleans Saints are one of the teams with a bull's eye on the back of their jerseys in 2009. Through six weeks of the NFL season the only 4 undefeated teams are the Colts, Broncos, Vikings and Saints.
New ticket plan to shut out scalpers Promoters of big events are tired of ticket scalpers buying up seats as soon as they go on sale, then jacking up the prices and reselling tickets. Officials at the New Orleans Arena are trying something new tonight to shut out the scalpers.
Saints getting tougher on both sides of the ball Drew Brees looked across the line of scrimmage and liked what he saw. It was the Saints' defense, trying to make each practice of training camp as miserable as possible for New Orleans' star quarterback, the offensive line, the running backs and receivers.
Kristian: Saints marching forward The Saints now turn from hunter to hunted. New Orleans is 5 and 0 to start the 2009 season. They are also on the heels of a convincing win over what was once considered to be the best team in the NFC in the New York Giants.
Saints fans beyond just believing - starting to dream A sound drubbing of what was supposed to be the toughest rival in the NFC has Saints fans happily stunned. After the 48-27 home victory of the Giants, fans of the Black & Gold seemed to be starting to forget years of faulty starts, and starting instead to dream of the Big Prize.
Deke: Notice served ? Saints 5 and 0 Turkey shoot...butt whippin'...taken out to the woodshed...are just a few slogans Who Dats use to describe what the New Orleans Saints did to the New York Giants in the Superdome. The G-Men from the Big Apple came way down yonder to New Orleans...and simply put, found out who really is the best team in football.
Jeff: Saints dominate Giants, win 48-27 The Saints continued their dominance over teams from the state of New York with an impressive 48 to 27 victory over the Giants on Sunday in the Louisiana Superdome.
Kristian: Saints and Giants hope to make statements The New York Giants have been where the Saints want to go. They've been in big games, they've been in the biggest of games and won the world championship.
Heightened security at Superdome for the rest of the season According to Doug Thornton with the Louisiana Superdome, Saints fans can expect heightened security to continue at all home games for the rest of this season. "We are going to continue this through the end of the year," Thornton said.
Drew and Bobby - QB to QB on Saints vs Giants! Saints QB and WWL QB Bobby Hebert went one on one about the Black & Gold's preparation for this week's game against the 5-0 New York Giants. Drew first addressed the Saints off week and how he thinks it will help New Orleans. "It was good. We got more time off than we have in the past and it gave us time to rest and get ready for the Giants game and the rest of the season."
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week 6 Each week during the NFL season post my Top 10 best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into week six. The match-ups to pay attention to: the Giants @ the Saints and the Ravens' visit to Viking country.
Mark: Shockey ready to face his former team When the Saints line up on the Superdome turf on Sunday against the New York Giants, New Orleans tight end Jeremy Shockey will see a lot of familiar faces across the line of scrimmage.
Manning finally getting a chance to play in Dome Mention the Saints and the city of New Orleans and the memories come quickly for Eli Manning. The youngest son of Saints legend Archie Manning, Eli Manning went to the Superdome almost every weekend the Saints were home, and his father even took him to a road game every now and then.
Deke: Why the Giants are undefeated Yes, they are arguably the best team in football right now and many have their reasons why. Some say New York is perfect thus far because of their offensive balance. Others point to the play of QB Eli Manning, the Giants' potent rushing attack, their emerging wide receivers or their tenacious defense. All of those things are true, but two things stand out to me when breaking down the G-Men.
Eli Manning Practices on Limited Basis Eli Manning is only taking the snaps his coaches think are most important to get him ready for the New York Giants' showdown with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
Geller: Eli's Dome-coming There are a few storylines to follow this Sunday when the Saints host the Giants. It's a battle of two undefeated teams, tight end Jeremy Shockey is facing NY for the first time since the Giants traded him to New Orleans and Eli Manning comes home to play his first game in the Dome. Talk about must see TV.
Shockey says no vendetta vs. Giants Jeremy Shockey was adamant, as he's been known to be. The matchup of the 5-0 Giants and 4-0 Saints is not about him, or his unhappy, injury-plagued last season in New York, or any kind of payback.

Manning, Pierce excited about game with Saints Off to their best start in almost two decades, the New York Giants are facing a week of distractions. There is going to be more talk about Eli Manning's heel, his first NFL game in his hometown of New Orleans and the Giants' first game against former teammate Jeremy Shockey since the disgruntled tight end was dealt to the Saints last year.
Kristian: Mike Bell to run with "even more aggression" You think you're excited about the New Orleans Saints returning to field this week against the New York Giants? Not as excited as Running back Mike Bell is to be coming off the bye and to be healthy.
Saints confidence surging after 4-0 start Don't expect to see any "bag heads" in the Louisiana Superdome this year. The Saints have become a full-blown sensation after winning each of their first four games by two touchdowns or more, easily exceeding the expectations of longtime fans.
Geller: Saints defense looking a lot "Sharper" Who Dat Nation, thank the Minnesota Vikings for letting safety Darren Sharper walk this offseason thinking the 33 year old was past his prime. Maybe it's that Mississippi river water, but the 13 year veteran and the entire Saints defense have been rejuvenated.
Thomas never doubted he'd come back strong Pierre Thomas put on more than 10 pounds during the offseason, hoping that would make him more in the mold of former Saints power runner Deuce McAllister.
Big Chief's NFL Top Ten - Week #5 Each week during the NFL Season I post my Top 10...who I consider the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the fifth week of the season. This week's match-ups to pay attention to: New England @ Denver and Atlanta @ San Francisco.
These Saints more balanced than past squads Sean Payton's reputation as a creative and effective offensive strategist has been well establish during his first three seasons as head coach of the New Orleans Saints. The Saints' weakness, particularly during the past two seasons, has been their defense. Payton has been working steadily to improve that part of his squad, and it finally appears to be paying off.
Saints fans flying high on 4-0 start Following the 24-10 victory over the New York Jets, most fans at the Superdome were ecstatic over the best start by the Black & Gold since 1993. "Black and Gold are Super Bowl bound, baby!", one man shouted as he exited Gate A.
Saints retailers being blitzed Saints fans can't get the Black and Gold off their minds...or their backs. The sale of Saints gear is in high gear. Pam Randazza at the Black & Gold Shop in Metairie says it almost equals the 2006 season. "It's much better than last year...not quite as good as when we came back from the storm. But that was just a really crazy year."
Deke: Saints Variety Pack beats Jets 24-10 After last week's win over Buffalo, many started to compare the 2009 Saints to the 2006 NFC Champion Saints. Those comparisons are way too unfair especially at this point in the season, as we have just wrapped up week number four.
Deke: Lay the seven points, Saints will win big To some this undefeated match-up is somewhat of a surprise, but Saints Head Coach Sean Payton is not at all surprised about the Jets' fast start. Back in July, prior to the start of training camp, Sean Payton was asked by Sports Illustrated's Peter King about what non-playoff team could make the leap to the post season in 2009.
Saints fans urged to arrive extra-early Sunday due to enhanced secuirty Officials with the New Orleans Saints and the Louisiana Superdome say a league-wide increase in security measures at all NFL venues may mean longer waits to get in the gates for this Sunday's matchup with the Jets.
Saints' Payton, Jets' Ryan are aggressive gurus
Call it a meeting of the masterminds in New Orleans. The Jets' Rex Ryan has made a career of creating aggressive, unpredictable defenses that keep opposing coaches guessing. The Saints' Sean Payton has done the same with his air-it-out offenses, putting up tons of yards and points in every way imaginable.
Kristian: Jets respect Saints - but they're not scared The Jets head coach talked with the New Orleans media this week, the first words out of Rex Ryan's mouth were, "Please tell me Drew Brees is not playing." Of course Ryan was kidding, but it shows the respect they have for Krew de Drew. The Media meets with the head coach of the Saints opponent each week, and typically there isn't a lot of colorful moments, but this one was different.
Jets' secondary banged up before Saints game New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and safety Kerry Rhodes were limited in practice Wednesday with injuries that aren't expected to sideline them against the New Orleans Saints. Revis (hamstring) and Rhodes (knee) didn't appear to be noticeably hobbled during the 40-minute window of practice the media are allowed to watch.
Tighter security at Sunday's Saints game New Orleans Saints fans are being encouraged to arrive at the Louisiana Superdome on Sunday earlier than normal because of increased security measures.
Saints' running game gaining steam, and confidence ierre Thomas was in no shape to celebrate. He'd been sick for about a week with a stomach virus that had him vomiting the night before last Sunday's game at Buffalo. On the joyous plane ride home following the Saints' 27-7 victory over the Bills, he only wanted to close his eyes and rest, but his teammates had a hard time leaving him alone.
Geller: Saints ground game ranked 2nd Seeing the Saints offense ranked 1st in the NFL comes as no surprise. What is eye popping is that the running game is currently ranked #2 in the league. The Saints are averaging 170.7 yards a game.
Big Chief's NFL Top 10 Week #4 Each week I post my Top 10 teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the fourth week of the season. Newcomers include Denver and Cincinnati with the Patriots making their way back in the Top10! The biggest match-ups this week involve ranked teams...as the Saints host the Jets and the Ravens visit the Patriots.
Chifici: Saints are not looking back at 2006 Do you remember the last time the New Orleans Saints started off a season at 3-0? It was not too far back, the magical post Katrina season of 2006 (10-6 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game).
Saints defense comes up big in 27-7 win over Bills Turns out Drew Brees doesn't have to throw a touchdown pass - or put up 45 points - to secure a victory. The New Orleans Saints' overlooked defense proved pretty stout. Will Smith had a sack and an interception to lead a Saints defense that held Terrell Owens without a catch for the first time since his rookie season in 1996 on the way to New Orleans' 27-7 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
Deke: Saints - Bills preview The Last time these two teams met in the regular season the game was held in San Antonio due to Hurricane Katrina. The Saints beat the Bills for one of their three wins in 2005. Saints Quarterback Drew Brees needs just fifty-two yards to pass former QB Bobby Hebert for third place in passing yards in Saints History.
Bell and Moore out for Buffalo game The New Orleans Saints will not have running back Mike Bell or wide receiver Lance Moore for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. Bell, who injured his knee against the Eagles last week, is averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Coach Sean Payton was coy about who would replace Bell for Sunday's game at Buffalo.
Saints head to Buffalo for game 3
The New Orleans Saints' offense has certainly been the NFL's most impressive through the season's first two weeks, but the Buffalo Bills may have the league's most surprising unit. As a result, Sunday's interconference matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium has the makings of a potential shootout, but the Bills will face a tall task trying to slow down Drew Brees and the unbeaten Saints' high-powered attack.
Greer says New Orleans was best possible option Jabari Greer rattles off the names of Frenchmen Street music clubs with unusual ease for someone who hasn't been in the Big Easy for long. It's one example of what the Saints' new starting cornerback is talking about when he says signing with New Orleans "was by far the best possibility for me."
Kristian: Balance no longer lip service for the Saints We've heard the mantra of balance before, but we hadn't seen any evidence until now. Saints fans grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of balance on offense last year. It was hard to argue with the success of the Saints offense considering they were the league leader in almost every offensive category except rushing attempts and rushing yards per game.
Geller: Saints D living up to hype All the talk this offseason was about new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams bringing an aggressive, turnover hungry defense to New Orleans. Well, in just two games the team is proving what a difference a coach can make by creating seven turnovers (6 interceptions & 1 forced fumble on special teams) while cruising to a 2-0 start.
Shanle didn't need INTs to feel secure with Saints Scott Shanle may be the last person to get caught up in his sudden surge in popularity, resulting largely from the first two interceptions in his seven-year career. "Darren Sharper - what's he at, 57 now?" Shanle said after practice this week. "I've got 55 more to go to tie him."
Big Chief's NFL Top 10 -Week 3 Each week during the NFL Season I will post my top ten of who I think are the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my top ten as we head into the third week of the season. Carolina, San Diego, and New England are gone while Atlanta, the New York Jets, Minnesota and the 49ers make their first appearance in the Top 10. And remember, what I said the first two weeks - do you think Tony Romo is that good? Three picks versus the G-Men shows he's not ready yet!
Mark: The Saints offense is the best and wants to get better The stats are gaudy. The Saints are first in the NFL in scoring (46.5 points per game), first in total offense (468 yards per game), second in passing (323 yards per game) and 8th in rushing offense (145 yards per game). The "Black & Gold" can also boast in a quarterback (Drew Brees) who has completed 75% of his passes and thrown for 9 touchdowns in the team's 2-0 start.
Monday Morning QB with Drew Brees ? Week 2 Saints/Eagles
Every week after Saints game-day, Drew Brees joins WWL’s Bob DelGiorno at 7:40am for “Monday Morning Quarterback," recapping that weeks match-up. This week the red hot Brees talked about going into Philadelphia and not only coming away with a win, but demolishing the Eagles 48 – 22.
Mike Bell calls knee sprain "nothing serious" New Orleans Saints running back Mike Bell says an MRI on his injured knee shows a sprain, but he describes it was somewhat minor injury. So, does he expect to play Sunday in Buffalo?
Sean Payton Sept. 21st Opening Statement:
“With the injuries from yesterday, I mentioned Lance Moore’s hamstring.
Deke: Black and Gold Impressive against Eagles Yes, all that talk about the Saints looking good only because they beat a miserable Detroit team can be squashed. New Orleans dominated the Philadelphia Eagles - a serious Super Bowl contender this season. The Saints defense took another step forward, and they beat the Eagles at their own game.
Hope springs eternal for fans of the Black and Gold A 48-22 victory on the road for the Saints may put teams around the NFL on notice that New Orleans is a contender, but many local fans tell WWL First News that this could actually be "the year."
Jeff: Saints send message with win over Eagles The New Orleans Saints sent a message to the NFC and the rest of the NFL with a convincing 48 to 22 victory over Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Drew Brees was sensational again, completing 25 of 34 passes for 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It was Brees’ 32nd career 300-yard passing game...
Saints dominate Eagles 48 - 22 A healthy Donovan McNabb may not have mattered against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Brees tossed three more touchdown passes, helping the Saints beat the Philadelphia Eagles 48-22 on Sunday...
Eagles QB McNabb "doubtful" for Sunday Eagles quarterback Dononvan McNabb is doubtful for Sunday's game against New Orleans because of a cracked rib. McNabb sat out of practice for the third straight day Friday.
Deke: Saints @ Eagles preview This one has the makings to be one of the best games of the season. Regardless of whether or not the Eagles' starting QB Donovan McNabb plays, the Eagles are a complete team...with or without him. With that said, they are much better with McNabb under center.
Eagles won't rule out injured QB McNabb The Eagles are holding out hope that quarterback Donovan McNabb might be able to play in their home opener against the New Orleans Saints. Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Morninweg said before Thursday's practice that McNabb has been "working hard" and "doing everything in his power to get back out there."
Kristian: Saints look for improvement and prepare for loud Philly crowd "You can improve a lot from week one to week two. I've always been taught it's an important week in regards to the corrects, not that any week isn't, that gap from the first game to the second you can get a lot done," Saints head coach Sean Payton said today.
Kristian: 3's company or 3's a crowd for the Saints backfield? Saints running back Mike Bell has shown what he can do when given the opportunity. He methodically pounded out the tough yardage between the tackles with 143 yards on 28 carries against the Lions.
Brees 'N Bobby - QB to QB on Lions and Eagles! Every Wednesday night exclusively on WWL SAINTSRadio our QB, Bobby Hebert and Saints QB Drew Brees go one on one. The meeting of the QB minds airs live at 6:35pm. This week Bobby and Drew discussed Drew's six touchdown performance in the Saints 45-27 win over Detroit. Bobby first asked Drew what he expects to see this week from the Philly defense.
Smith and Grant ready to focus on football With the specter of his four-game suspension lifted for now, Will Smith half-jokingly pointed out that there was still one game he'd probably have to sit out. That game would be the Pro Bowl, Smith said with a grin, "because we'll be in the Super Bowl."
Geller: Are the Saints and the universe aligned? It seems something special is brewing here in the Crescent City. You obviously have to be good to win in the NFL, but luck also plays a part. Thanks to a series of a few events, fortune seems to favor the Saints right now, setting them up for success.
NFL Statement on Fairness and Integrity of NFL Drug Programs Commissioner Goodell announced today that the suspensions of New Orleans Saints players Charles Grant and Will Smith for their 2008 violations of the NFL’s Policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances will not be enforced at the present time.
Big Chief's NFL TOP 10 - Week #2 Each week during the NFL season I'll post my Top 10...who I think are the ten best teams in the NFL. Here's my Top 10 as we head into the second week of the season. Carolina falls out of the top ten and the Patriots move down, after basically a lucky win against Buffalo. This week the two teams from the Keystone state head up my top ten!

Deke: Saints and Eagles - Round 3? Sunday, when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Saints, a lot could be on the line. Yes, I know it's only the second week of the season, but the possibility of a second match-up between "the birds" and the "Bless You Boys" is more likely to happen than not.
NFL holding off on suspending Smith, Grant The NFL has decided against enforcing four-game suspensions of Charles Grant and Will Smith at this time, opening the way for the New Orleans Saints' starting defensive ends to play this week and possibly the whole 2009 season.

Saints owner Tom Benson is scheduled to close the deal for the Dominion Tower office building, New Orleans Center mall, and parking garage. Once the deal is done, Benson will renovate the office building at 1450 Poydras Street and lease it to state agencies.
Mark: Saints glad to be 1 and 0 - know much work lies ahead As the Saints gear up for the Eagles on Sunday. They could only briefly savor their start to the 2009 NFL season with a victory over Detroit 45 -27. New Orleans head coach Sean Payton liked what he saw for the most part on Sunday. "I was pleased to get a win to start the season. There are a number of positive things on the video, and yet it's week one and there are a lot of things that we have to get cleaned up."
Jeff Garcia back with the Eagles Jeff Garcia is back with the Philadelphia Eagles as Philly prepares for the Saints. Eagles coach Andy Reid on Monday confirmed the team has signed Garcia, a 10-year veteran who played for Philadelphia in 2006 and went 5-1 in six starts while McNabb was injured. The team needed a backup quarterback in case McNabb, who suffered a broken rib in Philadelphia's 38-10 win over Carolina in the season opener, is not able to play this week against the New Orleans Saints.
Black and Gold fans bask in glow of win Some analysts called it an "ugly" win, but for most fans who talked to WWL First News at the Superdome, the victory over Detroit was a solid win, and a perfect way to start off a promising season. "It's amazing, first game of the season...who'd have thought it." Fans enjoyed watching a offense that was mostly flawless, with Drew Brees striking for six touchdowns.
Kristian: Saints fans, it's about "Dat" time The Saints are gearing up to face a rookie Detroit Lions quarterback in Sunday's home opener in the Superdome. Black and Gold players have had plenty to say about Mathew Stafford, calling him "Fresh meat" and saying "It's very important that we break his spirit early...We're going to come after him." Will comments like that intimidate or inspire the first year QB in his first career start?
Analyst: Grant and Smith may get to play all year after ruling A federal appeals court issued a ruling Friday in the case involving the NFL and two Saints players. It may or may not end up helping the players. "Right now we are going to think about Detroit and Detroit only," Saints defensive end Charles Grant said when reporters told him about the ruling. "All I'm focused on is Detroit... Get this one win against Detroit, on the way to the Super Bowl and that's it."
Charles Grant speaks about likely suspension A federal appeals court said Friday that the NFL can't immediately suspend Minnesota Vikings Pat Williams and Kevin Williams for violating the league's anti-doping policy, but also ruled that the NFL was in the right to suspend New Orleans defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant as well as former Saints running back Deuce McAllister.
Saints fans look forward with hope to 2009 The NFL's 2009 season has officially kicked off. The Saints play their first game Sunday. |
Mark: Saints schedule is set up for fast Black and Gold start The first month of the 2009 season has the Saints hosting Detroit, then playing at Philadelphia and Buffalo, followed up by a home date against the Jets. |
Saints' Jammal Brown out up to six weeks The New Orleans Saints have confirmed to WWL First News that offensive tackle Jammal Brown will undergo surgery for an injury that Brown sustained during the preseason.
Geller: Saints new look defense licking their chops Sunday marks the second time the Saints will open their season against the Detroit Lions. Back in 2000, Detroit beat the Black & Gold 14-10 in the Dome. The only touchdown for the Saints that day was an interception taken to the house by safety Sammy Knight. This Sunday look for more of those positives on the defensive side of the ball.
Saints LT Bushrod says he's ready to protect Brees Jermon Bushrod has the physical stature to protect the blind side of one of the NFL's most prolific quarterbacks. |
Kristian: Are the Saints overlooking the Lions? Not a chance! As the Saints turned their full attention to the Detroit Lions and the season opener this Sunday, the million dollar question is: Are they looking past a team that went 0 and 16 last year? While no one absolutely knows for certain if that is the case, Saints players and their head Coach Sean Payton are saying the right thing.
Payton plans to play Smith, Grant, for now Despite the looming possibility of four-game suspensions for Will Smith and Charles Grant, Saints coach Sean Payton intends to play the starting defensive ends in Sunday's season opener against Detroit - unless the NFL soon says otherwise. New defensive coordinator Greg Williams has the team playing aggressive, turnover hungry ball and it's been a lot of fun to watch.
Bush, Thomas doubtful for preseason finale Bush, who hasn't played since straining his right calf during joint practices with the Houston Texans during training camp, has only three carries for 5 yards during the entire preseason - all in the exhibition opener Aug. 14. |
Harrington hoping to stick after preseason finale The former first-round draft pick turned journeyman, now backing up Drew Brees and Mark Brunell in New Orleans, expects to see significant playing time in the Saints' preseason finale Thursday night against the Miami Dolphins. |
Saints see Young maturing quickly at safety Usama Young might be better known for his Super Bowl commercial last winter than anything he's done on a football field in his first two seasons with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints are now giving him another shot in the NFL.
