Mandeville police blast suspicious bag

With a loud boom, a tense situation on the Northshore this morning ended uneventfully.  An abandoned briefcase at the Mandeville post office created quite a stir.

A custodian this morning noticed the black bag left in a trash can outside the post office, and in light of recent events, notified police.

Lt. Gerald Sticker with Mandeville Police said an x-ray was inconclusive, "so, out of an abundance of caution, they deployed the old-fashioned shotgun and shot the briefcase."

Sticker said an examination of the bag after that revealed it was full of junk.

"It was just trash -- cans and just rubbish of sorts," said Sticker.
Mandeville police put out a statement this afternoon saying, "We received a call from a subject (identity will be withheld) who, after watching all of the media coverage realized he had actually discarded the suspicious case in the trash at the Mandeville Post Office. Our investigators have interviewed him and verified his story. Case closed!!"
