A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman says former state representative Sherman Copelin has turned himself in over charges of alleged contractor fraud. Col. John Fortunato tells WWL First News Copelin turned himself to to the JPSO this morning, and faces charges of contractor fraud, misapplication of payments and theft. Fortunato says the charges are related to a dispute with subcontractors hired by Copelin. Copelin served a Representative in the state legislature from 1986 through 1999. According to Fortunato, Copelin is accused of fraud exceeding $800,000 related to funds involved in rebuilding a Westbank private school that was damaged by Katrina.
