We say some very unique things around here! Thanks to everyone who called and texted us at 870870 with their observations of the sayings and words that make New Orleans and South Louisiana so unusual.
It was inspired by a story I told about when I first moved to New Orleans. I was covering an industrial accident on the Westbank where a worker was injured in an explosion. When I arrived on the scene, workers told me that "the berler blew up." I was preparing my script for the next newscast on WWL Radio and was going over what I was planning to say.
Someone passing by overheard me saying that plant workers had told me that the "berler" exploded. He looked at me kind of funny, prompting me to ask what I had said that made him react that way. He explained that some people around here say "berl" when most people say "boil." He prevented me from calling it a "berler" on the radio.
That prompted David Blake and myself to start talking about the unique words and phrases here. Below is a list that listeners texted to 870870:
