If a New Orleans lawmaker gets his way, it won't be enough to just get a back ground check before buying a gun in Louisiana. Representative Austin Badon wants a required firearms safety class completed first, in a new bill he just filed.
Badon who contends he's not anti-gun but he would feel much better if everyone buying a gun goes through certified training.
"It does not do anything to your second amendment rights, you can buy as many firearms as you want,'' said Badon.
Badon wants safety first, so gun buyers across the state have a least basic knowledge on how the weapon operates.
''You have to know to know the right situation, when to use it and when not to use it, so education is good.''
Badon says for those who want a concealed weapons permit, a similar process is already required, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal for a person to verify they completed that course before buying a gun.
Badon doesn't think this bill will violate the constitutional amendment passed by voters last fall that would require "strict scrutiny" of any restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms.
