Louisiana auto insurance rates top nation

It's official: Louisiana drivers pay the most for insurance than anywhere else in the country, according to the annual survey by Insure.com.

According to the web site, Louisiana drivers pay an average premium of $2,699.  The national average is $1,510.

"In three out of the last four years, Louisiana has been the highest state for auto insurance premiums," said Insure.com editorial director Amy Danise.

She says a lot of the reason for that is lawsuits. Danise says people involved in wrecks often file injury claims, and claims for under $50,000 are decided by judges, who seem to often side with plaintiffs.

"Many observers believe that these judges will side more with the little guys than the insurance companies," Danise said.  "That is money out of the insurance companies' pocket and that's going to get passed on to the drivers in Louisiana."

Danise says the best defense is to maintain a clean driving record.  A good credit score helps, too.

You could also try changing what you drive.  For example, the Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG sedan commands the highest insurance premium according to the survey.  The cheapest is the Jeep Patriot Sport.
