Drivers share thoughts on CCC lights
Chris Miller Reporting
This weekend, the lights that decorate the top of the Crescent City Connection are set to go dark. Louisiana highway officials say because the bridge tolls are suspended pending a re-vote, they can't pay the money to keep them lit.
Tell people the lights are going off on the bridge, and what's their first reaction?
"When it's dark outside, you want to be able to see, and especially if it's foggy," one commuter told WWL First News this morning.
But the lights the Department of Transportation and Development is talking about switching off are the cosmetic lights, the ones on top of the steel superstructure, far above the roadway. Made aware of this, some motorists changed their minds.
"It's just decorative? Oh, that ain't nothing to be worried about, then," another driver said.
And even if the lights were useful for lighting the road, some drivers say they'll do just fine without them: "Well I guess if you have your headlights to your car I guess you still could see."
Voters are scheduled to settle the tolls issue on May 4.
