Should dating be romantic, or focus more on the financial partnership you'll be forming with a marriage? A new website aims to help people use their heads before their hearts, protecting your assets by looking deeply into your potential partner's financial affairs.
CreditScoreDating.com says they're the place "where good credit scores are sexy," using "the member input credit scores in our matching process to help you find your perfect match."
Is this an indication that dating is changing overall? "Actually, no," says Dr. Martin Drell with the Department of Psychiatry at LSU Health Sciences Center. "I think it's getting updated in the Internet age though. I think in some ways this is one of the many different creases on 'Do people marry for love.'"
He says there's the idea here in modern times that people should marry for love, and then he says they wonder why the divorce rate is over 50%. As for checking credit scores before seriously dating someone? "It's just part of the due diligence that is more important now," says Dr. Drell.
He says it possible the Great Recession changed how we look at a potential mate, making some people worry more about security as during the financial crisis many, many Americans lost their homes to foreclosure or filed for bankruptcy.
"It does solve a problem that is in many couples, that very often people will talk about sex, they'll talk about everything, but they won't talk about their money. And this is part of the greater transparency thanks to the Internet," says Dr. Drell.
