NOPD: Russian mafia not involved in Monette disappearance
Chris Miller Reporting
New Orleans Police say talk of the Russian mob abducting women in New Orleans -- specifically missing school teacher Terrilyn Monette -- is a hoax.
The rumor is that operatives of the Russian mob wait for unsuspecting women to leave local businesses in their vehicles, then crash into them to get them out of their car, kidnap them, drug them, and sell them into prostitution. The rumor claims the New Orleans Police Department believes this is what happened to Terrilyn Monette.
New Orleans Police said today in a news release that they have no evidence to support that claim.
"We cannot substantiate this rumor, there are no prudent facts or evidence to support this claim," said Officer Frank Robertson in the news release. "We are...in touch with other local law enforcement agencies and the federal authorities to make them aware of this hoax."
