Sheriff: Deputy arrested for theft of JPSO property

Sheriff Newell Normand announced the arrest and termination today of JPSO Deputy George Hernandez, Sr. today.  Hernandez was assigned to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Property and Evidence Section and a news release indicated he has been a member of the JPSO since March of 1997.

On Friday Normand says "Our Internal Affairs Bureau received information from someone known to Deputy Hernandez relative to his involvement in a systematic theft of JPSO property from within his Section. That information was relayed to our Criminal Investigations Bureau, thus, a criminal investigation was initiated. Sufficient information was developed leading our investigators to author search warrants for Hernandez's home address along with a second address, both in Slidell."

JPSO says their Property Crimes Detectives with the assistance of the Slidell Police Department and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office Investigators executed search warrants and recovered numerous items which are still being identified.

"When questioned regarding his involvement and the allegations made against him, Hernandez, while not being completely truthful, admitted to sufficient pilfering of items from the JPSO," Normand says and "Based on our investigators' findings, George Hernandez, Sr., was transported to the JPCC where he was booked with Felony Systematic Theft."

The Sheriff says this investigation remains ongoing at this time.  Anyone with information into any illegal activity involving George Hernandez, Sr., is urged to call Lt. Al Cantrell of our Property Crimes Section at 504-364-5300 or Crimestoppers.
