Manhunt underway after NOPD officer shot



SWAT teams are searching for a suspect after a New Orleans police officer was shot while responding to a report of a robbery near Poland and St. Claude avenues early this morning.

The shooting happened just before 7:30 a.m. at a Dollar General at the intersection of Poland and St. Claude avenues.

NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas, speaking to the media at the scene of the shooting, says the officer was "ambushed" and shot several times.
 
Serpas says the officer is in "very serious condition" at a local hospital.  A search is underway for the suspect, who reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, according to Serpas  The. suspect is described as a black male, 5'7", wearing blue jeans, a gray hoodie, a hat and a blue and white bandana.

The Chief says the officer was "ambushed" and "attacked" in the store by the shooter.

Serpas says a former officer who was at the scene picked up the fallen officer's radio and called for help.
