Rock 'n' Roll Marathon brings music and runners to the streets

This Sunday's Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Marathon and Half Marathon will showcase some of the biggest names in running.

"It's really a moving block party that involves the whole community.  It's meant to make running fun.  We don't take ourselves too seriously.  And we certainly welcome runners of all abilities, shapes and sizes," says marathon spokeswoman Amana Miyamae.

Everyone's also welcome to cheer on the runners she says and it all ends with a concert at City Park.

The event is expected to draw more than 16,000 runners from all across the globe as live bands rock each mile

It all starts with the Health and Fitness Expo which begins today at the Morial Convention Center.  An exciting field of elite athletes will share training advice and answer questions at an interactive clinic today. Elites include Mo Farah, 2-time gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics.  Miyamae says more than 100 exhibitors will be offering the latest running gear, training tips and nutritional advise at the expo, and it's free and open to the public.

Children in grades K-7 can experience their own finish line fun at ING KiDS ROCK New Orleans on Saturday at City Park.

On race day there will be traffic and parking restrictions.  The City of New Orleans has issued this advisory:

Both races begin at 7:00 a.m. in the Central Business District at the corner of Poydras and Camp Streets, running along Poydras Street to Rampart Street, to Howard Avenue and Lee Circle, proceeding up St. Charles Avenue to the front entrance of Audubon Park, traveling back down St. Charles Avenue through the French Quarter along Decatur Street to Esplanade Avenue.

The latter part of the course involves the City Park and Lakefront area of the City, ending in City Park.

Race participants that are driving to the race are encouraged to park in downtown long term lots and carpool whenever possible.

There will be no parking along the race route.

The race course and area surrounding the starting line and Lafayette Square will become a no parking zone beginning 12:00 a.m. midnight Saturday evening. Towing will begin at that time along the course to allow for race organizers to begin race set-up, including along Decatur Street near the French Market, along both sides of Esplanade Avenue, and the neutral ground (median) on Marconi Drive adjacent to City Park. Meters will be bagged and signs will be posted warning residents of the parking restrictions.

Parking enforcement personnel will be monitoring for illegal parking, including blocking hydrants, driveways and sidewalks, or parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection or stop signs, in the residential neighborhoods adjacent to the starting and finish line, including Navarre, City Park, Faubourg St. John and Algiers Point. Motorists are also reminded to park in the direction of travel on one-way streets, and with the right wheel to the curb on two-way streets.

Signs are also posted on Marconi Drive by City Park to warn drivers not to park on the neutral ground, near the race's finish line.
