The shooting happend about a block from the school at the intersection of Esplanade and Broad this afternoon.
The NOPD has not indicated if the victim was a student, but an eyewitness we spoke with said the victim did appear to be a student.
The eyewitness described to WWL Radio News what he saw.
"I heard two shots...jumped out on my balcony to see a black male with a weapon. And then he opened fire, around 8 to 10 more shots, at a...student of the local school here, John McDonough, as he lay against the wall of the Rent-A-Center."
WWL-TV reports that one person is in custody, according to the NOPD.
