As the Saints work to make salary-cap room, the team has reportedly asked linebacker Jon Vilma and defensive end Will Smith to restructure their contracts.
The story was initially reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on his Twitter page.
WWL Saints Sideline Reporter Kristian Garic says the move is not unexpected.
"I'm not surprised at all, when you look at the salary cap issues right now," Garic says. "They both restructured last year, and with both of them being up in age, and being on the back end of their careers, it's an obvious move by the team."
Does Kristian think Vilma and Smith will go for the offered restructuring?
"It will be interesting...I wouldn't be surprised if it went either way. Both of them might say, "I restructured last year, and I don't want to do that anymore," and they'd get released by the Saints. Either way, if they're restructured or cut, it will make way for the team to free up valuable salary cap space."
