1,681 arrests made during Carnival 2013

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman today announced there were 1,681 arrests during the 2013 Carnival season, beginning on the first day of parades, January 25th and ending Fat Tuesday, February 12th.

Of the arrests, 789 were made on state charges, 695 on municipal and 197 on traffic violations.

The number of arrests included 289 made during the weekend of Super Bowl XLVII, between February 1st and 4th.

Charges ranged from the more typical Mardi Gras violations, such as lewd conduct, public drunkenness, disturbing the peace and other municipal charges, to more serious violations, including state charges like drug arrests and violent crimes.

The Sheriff's Office also operated the Mobile Communications Unit and Mardi Gras alternate Intake and Processing Compound, processing a combined total of 17 arrests during Mardi Gras and Super Bowl weekends. This included three during Super Bowl weekend and 14 during Mardi Gras festivities. Known as the Booking Bus, this has been used by the OPSO to assist the New Orleans Police Department for eight years.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office provided for crowd control and security at Gallier Hall, and the Sheriff's Mounted Division and patrol units provided an escort for many parades. The Sheriff's Office also worked in a variety of capacities during Super Bowl week.
