Crawfish experts says this could be the worst season for Louisiana crawfish in recent memory.
David Savoy is president of the Louisiana Crawfish Farmers' Association. He says crawfish traps in some areas are coming up nearly empty, thanks to cold weather and sparse sunshine that has slowed crawfish breeding.
Savoy says this season is the worst he's seen in ten years, with some traps coming up nearly empty.
Stephen Minvielle, Director of the Louisiana Crawfish Farmer's Association, says that while it may mean higher prices for consumers, retail crawfish prices are relatively low right now.

Minvielle says drought in some parishes is also to blame for the poor performance of some crawfish farms. "The season is not shaping up very promising at all, said Minvielle. "I mean, we do have crawfish out there...we're seeing a larger volume of these smaller crawfish, because the areas that are in production that are producing any amount have been supplying the market and they're pulling it too hard. They're not letting the crawfish get to a good size like the consumer likes to see."
Minvielle notes, however, that the harvests in Iberia and St. Martin parishes have "been OK."
