"He should stay in office," one woman said. "He's the Pope!"
"I find it very disturbing," one man told WWL First News. "It's very odd."
Others said if the pope feels it's time to move on, then so be it.
"I think it's time to move forward and get someone from Latin America or Africa, one of the areas where most of the Catholics live today," one man suggested.
"Sometimes, a little change is for the better of the community, you know?" another woman said.
New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond released this statement:
"I have a great deal of admiration for Pope Benedict XVI and appreciate his recognition of the health issues he is facing. I admire his humility in asking the cardinals to come together in prayer to select his successor. I ask all Catholics to remember the Holy Father in prayer and to pray for the cardinals as they prepare for the conclave in order to select a successor for Pope Benedict XVI."
