Sen. Landrieu recommends new U.S. Attorney

Senator Mary Landrieu today announced she is recommending attorney Kenneth Polite, Jr. for the job of U.S. Attorney in New Orleans.

Polite currently works at the firm of Liskow and Lewis in New Orleans.  The firm's web site says he specializes in government investigations and white collar criminal defense.  Before joining Liskow and Lewis, Polite was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the southern district of New York, where he won convictions in public corruption and organized crime cases.

He is a graduate of Harvard University and Georgetown University Law Center.

"Ken Polite is a very well respected lawyer," says former federal prosecutor Chick Foret.  "There are several lawyers who speak very highly of him."

In a statement, Senator Landrieu said "Mr. Polite is part of the next generation of dynamic leaders who are committed to ushering in that change. He believes in the potential of our region and understands that establishing and nurturing the public trust will be critical to this effort. His legal experience and years as a prosecutor, combined with his stellar academic credentials, quickly elevated him to the top of an impressive field of candidates."

It will be up to President Barack Obama to formally nominate Polite.  The duties of U.S. Attorney in New Orleans are currently being performed by Dana Boente, a veteran prosecutor from Virginia appointed to the New Orleans office after the resignation of Jim Letten.  Letten resigned after two of his top prosecutors were outed as the people behind some anonymous public statements made in the comments sections of news articles posted to NOLA.com, the Internet outlet of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
