Miles: 2013 recruiting class contains integrity and character

LSU Coach Les Miles believes the 27 players added to the football program on Wednesday is one the strongest classes he's signed since arriving in Baton Rouge in 2005. Time will tell if it will match the 2009 class, which featured Morris Claiborne, Chris Faulk, Barkevious Mingo, Kevin Minter, Sam Montgomery and Rueben Randle.

Signing big and athletic defensive linemen were a point of emphasis and LSU had to go outside of the state to get them. A key signee was 6-foot-5 defensive end Frank Herron of Memphis, Tennessee. He's listed as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com.

Miles and his coaching staff pulled off a surprise by signing Tashawn Bower. The defensive end from Somerville, New Jersey, was committed to Auburn, but he's headed to LSU instead. Bower is ranked as the 11th best defensive end in the country and Miles said fans can expect he'll be on the field next season.

Another key defensive lineman signee is Greg Gilmore of Hope Mills, North Carolina. Gilmore is ranked as the best player coming out of the Tar Heel state. The five-star prospect is 6-foot-4, 275 pounds.

LSU was able to sign top prospects from the Bayou State as well. Kendell Beckwith led East Feliciana to the Class 2A semi-finals in 2012. In 2013, he could see playing time at strongside linebacker in purple and gold.  Shreveport's Tre'davious White has 4.39 speed and he's a cousin of former LSU standout Morris Claiborne. White will be a cornerback and he can also return kicks.

The fastest player in the class is Jeryl Brazil of Loranger. He's the state's record holder in the 55 meters, as he ran it in 6.25 seconds, breaking Trindon Holliday's record. Brazil was the first commitment of the 2013 recruiting class and the coaching staff will have to figure out if he's better served on offense or defense.

The 2013 recruiting class features four wide receivers. Kevin Spears from Holy Cross in New Orleans played only one season of high school football, but showed enough talent to get a scholarship offer from LSU and other schools.

There are two quarterbacks in this class. Both Anthony Jennings and Hayden Rettig enrolled at LSU in January. Jennings is considered a dual-threat quarterback, but has a good arm. Rettig is a pro-style signal caller from Los Angeles.
There are no running backs in this class. LSU has Alfred Blue, Jeremy Hill, Kenny Hilliard and Terrance Magee returning next season. And Miles didn't mention him by name, but he's holding a spot in the 2014 recruiting class for St. Aug star Leonard Fournette. The recruitment of Fournette will be a story to watch for the next year.
