With the slew of events the Crescent City has seen the past few weeks between Super Bowl and Carnival, Valentine's Day is almost getting lost this year, but many New Orleanians say they already have their plans in place, including romantic dinners, extravagant gifts like diamond rings and special touches like breakfast featuring heart-shaped pancakes.
This downtown worker has some romantic plans: "My wife and I, we'll have dinner. I have a ring I have purchased for her and I'm going to surprise her with it. A diamond ring!"
But not everyone is celebrating the holiday, as another man told me "Valentine's Day is a gimmick." It turns out his girlfriend broke up with him on that holiday, and he's been a little bitter ever since.
Valentine's Day is the day after Ash Wednesday this year and the National Retail Federation says "Consumers this year are set to spoil their friends, family and loved ones this Valentine's Day in a very big way. According to NRF's 2012 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGinsight, the average person celebrating the holiday will shell out $126.03, up 8.5 percent over last year's $116.21 and the highest in the survey's 10-year history. Total spending is expected to reach $17.6 billion."
