Cops: Slidell bank robber shoots self

St. Tammany Sheriff's investigators say a man suspected of robbing a Slidell-area bank at gunpoint turned his gun on himself after running from police.

Authorities say police received a an alarm of holdup in progress from the Gulf Coast on Oak Harbor at approximately 2:15 PM.   According to investigators, witnesses later told police the suspect entered the bank wearing a hoodie, mask, and gloves as he displayed a gun and demanded money.

A 911 call to the Sheriff's Office shortly afterwards gave a description of the suspected bank robber's getaway vehicle, according to a Sheriff's spokesman.

Sgt. Sean Beavers says deputies located the vehicle in the Kingspoint subdivision within minutes and attempted to stop the vehicle.  That's when officers say suspect shot himself in the head with a small caliber handgun.

Following the shooting, deputies say they used the push bumpers on their patrol cars to bring the suspect's vehicle to a stop.

Sgt. Beavers says the suspect survived the shooting and is currently in a New Orleans hospital.
