Widened Huey to be done June 16th

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development today announced the Huey P. Long Bridge widening project will be completed on June 16th.

"In June drivers will enjoy three eleven foot lanes in each direction,"  Louisiana Transportation Secretary Sherri LeBas said.

She added there will also be eight food wide shoulders.

The three new lanes each way replace the two unusually narrow lanes in each direction that have had many drivers crossing the bridge in a white-knuckled sweat for decades.

The project has been under construction for seven years.

Officials say it has cost $1.2 billion.

Jefferson Parish President John Young expects it to lead to a business boom.

"It will be to Jefferson Parish and indeed the entire metropolitan area what the Superdome was to Poydras Street," he explained.  "It will be a catalyst to future economic growth and development."
