Workday commute to downtown NOLA likely to take longer

The weekday commute into New Orleans' Central Business District is about to get more tricky.  Starting tomorrow, the Poydras Street from I-10 exit closes through Super Bowl weekend.

With the Superdome exit coming off the river-bound Pontchartrain Expressway already closed, drivers can expect a lot more traffic on the exit ramps that remain open.  New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas says he knows it's going to be an inconvenience, and he's asking motorists to just try and make the best of it.

"Sometimes we all need to be a little patient," he cautioned.  Serpas says they've done their best to get prepared.

"Every single police officer was retrained on traffic management," he said.  "We have a good traffic management plan."

Also starting tomorrow, Poydras Street alongside the Superdome, from around S. Claiborne Ave. to LaSalle St., will be closed in the river-bound direction.  Poydras going in the opposite direction will remain open until 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 1.  At that point, both sides of Poydras between Loyola and Claiborne will be closed.
