Suspect Booked in New Year's Eve Murder

New Orleans Police say they have arrested the man they believe committed the city's last murder of 2012.

23-year-old Keric Mealy has been charged with the Second-Degree Murder of 21-year-old Jared Haynes near North Dorgenois and Mazant Street on the afternoon of December 31, 2012.

Haynes died on the scene of multiple gunshot wounds to his body. The Coroner's investigator found a weapon under his body.

Several area residents said that Mealy and Haynes had been involved in an ongoing dispute.
Mealy is currently serving time in the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Weekend Warrior Program for Attempted Purse Snatching until October 25, 2015. He was previously arrested for Attempted Purse Snatching, Possession of Hydrocodone, Possession of Alprazolam, Careless Operation, and Unlawful Use of License.
