It's a two-day seminar, to be held on February 16th and 17th, for people with some experience in electrical, construction or comparable trades.
"So, if you're a mechanic or an electrician or in construction and looking to make a career change, this might be the program for you," says Ashley Charbonnet, Director of Programs at New Orleans Video Access Center.
The seminar, called "Ready Set Film," has openings for 40 applicants from those kind of jobs or any comparable trade, 24 from Orleans and 16 from Jefferson Parish.
"Carpentry, mechanical engineering, even auto mechanics...anybody with those sort of skills. Because you're going to be able to translate your skills into skills that are needed in the grip and electric department on a film set," says Charbonnet.
"As the film industry in New Orleans continues to grow, so does the demand for skilled workers," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu. "This seminar is an extraordinary opportunity for our local residents to get hands-on training and an opportunity to work on the feature films, television or commercial projects filming in our city."
Intensive training will be taught by film industry veterans and union department heads. The seminar will include instruction on safety requirements, technical terms, use of lighting and rigging equipment which are skills required to work in grip and electric departments on feature films and television sets.
The training will also fulfill two days of a thirty day "on set" requirement for entry into the local film industry trade union, IATSE Local 478.
"And afterward, NOVAC is going to track the participants and work with them to help them find work in the industry," Charbonnet says. "We're going to reach out to all of the production companies to see out what's going and how we can get their foot in the door."
The February training will be held at Spectrum FX, a special effects studio, in Harahan, La. Applicants must be 18 years old or older and must send a current resume and cover letter to workforce@novacvideo.org <mailto:workforce@novacvideo.org>.
