The theme this year is "Comes Early" and Her Royal Highness of Krewe du Vieux, Queen Bethany Bultman says "It will be bawdy and lewd and not appropriate for children," as always.
Bultman is also executive director of the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic, which the krewe supports with a portion of this year's parade.
Some of the satire will be aimed at the NFL and the Super Bowl she says, along with lots of local institutions making the news this year, like the Times-Picayune newspaper.
"The Krewe du Vieux is originally and more fully known as the Krewe du Vieux Carre (Vieux Carre being another term for the French Quarter). It is one of the earliest parades of the New Orleans Carnival calendar," and organizers say "It is noted for wild satirical and adult themes, as well as for showcasing some of the best brass and jazz bands in New Orleans.
"It is unique among all Mardi Gras parades in the city because it alone carries on the old traditions of Carnival celebrations, by using decorated mule-drawn floats with satirical themes, accompanied by costumed revelers dancing in the streets to the sounds of jazzy street musicians," according to the krewe's website, and "We believe in exposing the world to the true nature of Mardi Gras-and in exposing ourselves to the world."
Bultman says "The ball is a blast. Right when the parade is over all the brass bands who have been in the parade do a jam for dancing and it's just incredible. I mean can you imagine dancing to nine brass bands at one time? It's fabulous!"
