While many of the school representatives want the best security they can get, the idea of arming school teachers was not leading request today.
However, officials do favor adding more police and armed security officers at schools. Committee Chairman John Schroder noted that while some schools are holding comprehensive "shooter drills," other systems are not and he said they need to.
''This is the world we live in and the only way we're going to be prepared is to somehow force the schools to practice these drills.''
The chief of security for St. Charles Parish schools, Kade Rogers, noted how they've added more cameras, everywhere they can.
''We have security cameras not only on designated areas on campuses but also in our school buses, we've gone from 195 cameras to 257 in our district,'' Rogers said.
The Homeland Security Committee is hoping to compile a list of ideas and then draft legislation on school security for the upcoming Legislative session this spring.
