Louisiana pet owners not fond of felines

It appears Louisiana folks don't care much for cats.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says Louisiana is one of the lowest ranking states in the country for cat ownership.

Louisiana ranks 48th for cat ownership with 25.9 percent of households owning a cat.

WWL First News asked folks in the CBD why that might be.

"Probably, because they have too many pitbulls," said one.

From others: "Cats are pretty sneaky," and, "Dogs fetch and cats don't."

And some were quite harsh.

"Because they're just worthless. I don't know what they're for."

Some thought cats don't share the same pleasures as many Louisianians.

"Probably because they don't hunt. They don't hunt for their master. They just hunt for themselves,"and, "There's something about dogs...we just like dogs better."

There were practical reasons: "The cat will tear your house up," and, "Cats require a lot of attention."

And, some, not so practical: "They look evil to me. I just don't like them."

Of course, the independence was an issue...the fact that cats do what they want, not what their owners want. While "dogs are a man's best friend," felines were found to be fussy and finicky to many.

And, protection was even an issue for this man we spoke to: "You can be in danger and a dog is going to save you. A cat will just watch you be in danger."

Only New Jersey, Utah and The District of Columbia ranked lower in cat ownership than Louisiana.

Cats have clawed their way up in popularity, however, from the last time such a survey was taken. In 2006, Louisiana ranked 50th of households owning a cat.
