Louisiana State Trooper Nick Manale says the investigation began when a homeowner, the victim of a burglary, called to report $2,000 in cash that had been recovered and stored as evidence was missing.
"Our troopers investigated and determined that the sole guardian of this money was Kentwood Police Chief Gregory Newton," Manale said. "Newton misappropriated the funds and basically used about $2,000 worth of the currency versus the complete seizure for his own personal use."

Manale says Chief Newton turned himself in today and was booked on a charge of malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice.
