The flu shot still the top advice

As flu cases continue to pile up, people continue to file into doctors offices and pharmacies across Louisiana to get their vaccinations and it's still not too late. At the LSU Health Sciences Center, Dr. Fred Lopez said getting the flu shot is still the most important thing you can do for protection but that comes with a caution.

''It's takes about two weeks for the immunity to develop against the flu after you've been vaccinated with the flu shot.''

Listen to Dr. Fred Lopez:

Lopez said after that two week period you should be protected and while Lopez strongly advises people with the flu to stay home from work but when is it safe to return?

''You should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever and other symptoms have resolved,'' said Lopez.

Staying away from people who have the flu and washing your hands many times throughout the day is also highly recommended.
