New WWII Museum pavilion open to the public

The newest addition to the National World War II Museum opens to the public on Sunday. Official dedication ceremonies were held Saturday.

The new U.S. Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center is a $35 million structure, showcasing the military weaponry and industrial requirements undertaken during the second World War.

The new Freedom Pavilion is immense: more than 26,000 square feet.

"It's 96-feet tall and it houses six iconic World War II aircraft, including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, 'My Gal Sal'," says Clem Goldberger, Marketing Vice President with the museum.

Other items inside the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center are  the 'big guns' of American military might. These include aircraft such as a restored B-25J Mitchell, SBD-3 Dauntless, TBM Avenger, P-51D Mustang, Corsair F4U-4 and an interactive submarine experience based on the final mission of the USS Tang.

The exhibits make full use of the newest digital technologies.

The $35 million glass and steel exhibit space holds a tribute to Congressional Medal of Honor winners and displays huge macro artifacts. It now joins a collection that is the most important assemblage of WWII artifacts anywhere.

"This pavilion really pays tribute to the people, the weapons and the industrial might that became America's arsenal of democracy," says Goldberger.

Funds for building the US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center came from a $20 million Congressional grant through the United States Department of Defense and $15 million gift from The Boeing Company.

The gift from Boeing, which built the B-17, represents the largest private contribution the Museum has received to date.
