Police: armed Gretna resident stops suspected thief

Gretna police today say an armed homeowner helped them capture a suspect in a number of car burglaries, including breaking into and stealing from a marked Gretna police car.

Police say the homeowner in the 1100-block of Jefferson caught a 14-year-old from New Orleans in the act of trying to steal his Ford F-150.  Deputy Chief Anthony Christiana says the homeowner was able to stop the attempted theft and hold the suspect until the cops got there.

"The homeowner was armed...and was giving commands to the suspect in the vehicle not to move," Christiana said.

Christiana says when officers took control of the scene, they discovered that the suspect had stolen property on him linking him to three vehicle burglaries in the area, including handcuffs, keys and road flares stolen from a Gretna police car!

"He did enter a marked Gretna police unit, parked at one of our officer's residence," Christiana said.  "He removed property from that particular police unit."

Christiana told WWL First News that in all four cases, the vehicles were locked, and the suspect forced his way into them.
