LSU tips off SEC hoops play with road game at Auburn

After posting a 9-and-2 record in the non-conference, the LSU Tigers begin league play against the Auburn Tigers tonight. Only Missouri, Ole Miss and Florida have better overall records than LSU, but the Tigers are not considered a threat to challenge for the league championship.

However, LSU should win its share of games in a league that has not fared well in out of conference play. Even Kentucky has lost four times.

LSU has two respectable losses. Both were on the road against Boise State and Marquette. Those two teams have a combined record of 23-and-4.

Under first-year head coach Johnny Jones, LSU is playing a more up tempo style of basketball. The Tigers are averaging 77 points a game, which is the fifth best mark in the SEC.

This style of play has helped junior guard Andre Stringer become the team's leading three-point shooter. Stringer is shooting 42% from three-point territory, after shooting only 32% from beyond the arc last season.

Shavon Coleman is LSU's leading scorer at 14 points a game. The transfer from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, is also the team's leading rebounder. The 6-foot-5 forward has only started three games, but will likely start against Auburn, because Johnny O' Bryant is nursing a high ankle sprain.

O'Bryant is expected to play against Auburn, but depending on his ankle, his minutes could be limited.

Point guard Anthony Hickey is also expected to play in the SEC opener. Hickey has struggled with off the court issues, which kept him from playing in a couple of games. But Hickey is very effective when on the court. He's averaging 11 points a game and he's the nation's leader in steals average.

Auburn enters Wednesday night's contest with a 6-and-7 record. But the Plainsmen are coming off a win over Florida State and Auburn lost by just two points to 12th ranked Illinois on December 29th.

Senior Frankie Sullivan leads Auburn in scoring as he averages nearly 18 a game. Sullivan was named SEC Player of the Week for scoring 24 points against the Seminoles.

Tip-off is at 8 PM on WWL 870am.
