Department spokesman Col. John Fortunato says the 83-year-old victim reported walking into her home on Avenue L to find the suspect standing in her living room. According to the victim, the suspect grabbed her and forced her into her bedroom, where he took her clothes off and forcibly raped her.
A police report says that when the victim told the suspect police were on the way, “the suspect jumped from the bed, began taking several pieces of jewelry from within the room and fled.”
Fortunato says that within four minutes of the radio broadcast, two Third District officers spotted a suspect fitting the description given by the victim. After a short foot pursuit, Fortunato says the suspect, 51-year-old Kenneth Adams (above,) was apprehended and placed under arrest “after a brief struggle.”
Arresting officers reported discovering several items of jewelry and a crack pipe in the Adams’ possession.
Fortunato says Adams admitted “breaking into the residence and physically touching the victim below her waist, however, denying raping her.”
Adams also admitted taking jewelry from the victim as he fled from her home, according to Fortunato.
Police say the victim positively identified Adams as her attacker in a photo lineup.
