Ready for a Super Mardi Gras?
Chris Miller Reporting
Have you had a king cake yet? The Mardi Gras season is officially underway, with reviewing stands going up on the parade route and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's Gallier Hall king cake party.
The mayor and members of several Mardi Gras krewes will ring in the Carnival season. It's a little shorter this year with Fat Tuesday falling just before mid-February.
The Super Bowl will happen smack in the middle of the season, and that means a good chance to bring in some extra cash, according to king cake maker Dave Haydel, Jr. of Haydel's bakery.
"Promoting New Orleans, promoting Mardi Gras, the whole nine yards, because the Super Bowl is here, I think that's going to have a really big an impact on a lot of our out-of-town business," Haydel said. He expects king cake bakers to capitalize on fan loyalties to whichever teams end up representing the AFC and NFC in the February 3 game.
"You know, that week of the Super Bowl, once we know who's playing, we'll probably see an influx in different color sugared King Cakes, you know, to root for different teams," he said.
Mardi Gras is February 12.
