Phunny Phorty Phellows announce 2013 Carnival Season

Once again the Phunny Phorty Phellows will take their annual historic streetcar ride Sunday night, announcing that Carnival has begun.
The costumed and masked krewe will assemble at the Willow Street car barn (right off S. Carrollton Ave.) at 6:30pm and will board the streetcar at 7pm sharp.
The krewe will follow the traditional St. Charles Avenue route downtown to Canal Street and circle back.
"We are so pleased to be riding through uptown New Orleans," says the Captain of the Phellows. "Bouncing to the rhythm of the Storyville Stompers, the streetcar will take us on a journey down St. Charles to Canal Street and turn around back to the car barn. Since this route includes the route of many Mardi Gras parades, it's only fitting that we blaze the trail."
During the ride, the Phellows will select their Queen and "Boss," the krewe's historic name for its king, by passing around two kingcakes with babies contained in them.
The Phellows are an historic Mardi Gras organization that first took to the streets in 1878 and ceased parading in 1898. The group was revived in 1981. They were known for their satirical parades and today's krewe members' costumes often reflect topical themes. One Carnival historian has referred to the organization as the "Dessert of Carnival."
