The Houma Police Department says a local woman is under arrest after doing some unorthodox holiday shopping at a local Wal-Mart.
A Houma PD spokesman says officers were called to the Wal-Mart on Grand Caillou Road after employees reported a shoplifting. According to investigators, Sharon Lee Clark (above) was observed by employees shoplifting 70 cosmetic items.
In all, officers say the woman had $750 worth of cosmetics stashed away as she attempted to leave the store without paying.
A police spokesman said the suspect “admitted to stealing the items for Christmas gifts for her relatives.”
When asked why she would steal the $750 in merchandise five days after Christmas to give as gifts, she allegedly responded, “she has a lot of relatives back home in Florida and there ain’t no Santa Claus.”
Clark was arrested for theft of more than $500 and booked into the Terrebonne Parish Jail.
The cosmetics were returned to the shelves, according to police.
