New Orleans, a New Year's celebration unlike any other

New Orleans rings in the new year tonight as only New Orleans can.

Everything about the local celebration is a bit different from any place else.

When it comes to New Year's, New Orleans doesn't drop the ball.

"We have our fleur-de-lis, that's about six feet high and four feet wide that we're going to drop," says Debbie Bressler, coordinator for the Crescent City Countdown Club.

"Everybody else drops a ball. We do things differently here. The music that we play isn't the traditional music. We have all of our soulful musicians playing...even Louis Armstrong and 'What a Wonderful World'."

Another feature singular to New Orleans will again be perched on the corner of the JAX rooftop for all to see.

"We have 'Baby New Year', of course, on top of the roof. And, no, we do not throw the baby from the roof! He's just a symbol and he sits on the roof," says Bressler.

And, of course, the 'Baby Bacchus' may be adorned in LSU purple and gold and wearing a Saints' helmet.

The fun starts at 9 p.m. in front of Jackson Square, with music by the Brass-A-Holics. Mia Borders performs at 10 o'clock and Bonerama takes the stage at 11.

"It is going to be a great celebration on Decatur Street as we lead up to midnight," says Bressler.

When the fleur-de-lis drops, the 'New Year' board will light up and the 'Symphony in the Sky' begins over the river.

"Fireworks will light up the Mississippi River. It's going to be beautiful! And, of course, it's going to be choreographed to very soulful New Orleans music."

"We're also going to have the Sugar Bowl teams'...Florida and Louisville's...fight songs, and the sky will light up with their colors," Bressler says.

"Of course, 'When the Saints Go Marching In' is going to play!"

The entire music program will be simulcast on WWL, 870AM and 105.3 FM.

It's definitely something to see and hear.

"We've been designated by Huffington Post as one of the top fireworks displays in the country. And that's huge," says Bressler.

"It is going to be unbelievable down at the riverfront this year for New Year's Eve," she says. "And the French Quarter is going to alive with revelers for 2013 NOLA New Year's Eve!"
